Retention Policies
Retention policies are created to automatically set the retention period for items in a mailbox. This can be used to delete items after a certain period of time. Or to force items to be kept for a certain period of time.
To get to the Retention Policies in Microsoft Purview, you need to have the following permissions:
- Global Administrator
- Compliance Administrator
- Compliance Data Administrator
Retention Policies in Microsoft Purview
Use retention policies for Exchange, SharePoint and OneDrive for Business. The only exception is for Exchange Archiving which still requires the specific retention policy settings in the Exchange Admin Center.
Automatic Inbox to Archive Policy
This creates an automatic policy that moves emails from the inbox to the archive folder. Use it when storage space is low on a mailbox and/or there are compliance needs.
You will need an archive license for this to work. Either as an Add-On or as part of the 365 license (for example BP E3 and E5 includes an archive license)
